Telehealth & PSYPACT

Research suggests that some treatments are, overall, as effective via telehealth as compared to in-person. These treatments include several offered at Stony Run: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Family-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT).

What about young children? A very effective treatment for young children is PCIT. Research evidences PCIT as being as or more effective and satisfactory when delivered by telehealth. PCIT differs in format from more typical treatments in that whether in-person or via telehealth, the therapist-child relationship is not the center of the treatment. In both in-person and telehealth PCIT, the therapist promotes child progress by supporting parents’ use of strategies both within and between sessions. Just as in in-person PCIT, children are highly engaged in telehealth PCIT because their parents are directly engaging them in the treatment. A benefit of telehealth PCIT is that families are practicing these skills in a more natural environment.

When telehealth may not be a good fit. Telehealth at Stony Run may not be a good fit for families seeking individual treatment for children under 10, and for older children and teens who may not be sufficiently engaged in a virtual setting or prepared to take leadership in implementing change in their lives. In some cases, Dr. LaFleur may recommend in-person care and support your exploration of care options. Other times, she may offer behavioral parent training or a hybrid program that includes both individual and behavioral parent training approaches.
